Data Destruction is the process of destroying data stored on digital data storage media, after which the destroyed data is completely unreadable and as such can not be accessed or used any more.

Data Destruction Methods are:

- Overwriting Data -

By Overwriting, the old data is wiped out by recording new binary data [0/1] on the storage media over its old content. 

Software-based overwriting is used to overwrite sectors (space/blocks) occupied by old data, with new data in a random pattern until the old data is considered unrecoverable. 

Data overwriting has to be repeated at a minimum of 3 passes. Professional grade overwriting software can be set to automatically overwrite media with random data 20, 50 or more than 100 times.

Generally, after Data Overwriting the storage device is operational and can be re-used.

- Degaussing -

The Degaussing method destroys data by changing a powerful magnetic field on disk drives or magnetic storage tapes.

After Degaussing a hard drive is inoperable.

- Physical Destruction - 

If further use of data storage media is not required, a Physical Destruction of storage device (media) is available as Data Destruction method. 

Usually, Physical Destruction is performed by Shredding or Pulverizing (i.e. scraping the storage device in specialized high-powered equipment).
